What does it mean if your car vibrates when braking?

If you are braking and there is vibration it generally means the brake rotors are warped. When you hit the brakes while traveling downhill, the brake rotors normally heat up. This heat can cause the metal to expand which causes the warpage shaking through the car as your speed reduces.

If you’re stopped at a stoplight, or when parked with the engine idling and the vehicle shakes or the engine shudders a lot, it may point out the motor mounts or transmission mounts are damaged or broken. If the shaking decreases, it’s a strong signal the engine’s motor mounts need to be inspected by a mechanic.
